Melissa Virahsawmy is a barrister practising in Mauritius since 2007. She qualified as a Solicitor in England in 2000 following which she spent 2 years with Deloitte in Luxembourg before returning to Mauritius. She then spent some 2 years with Ernst & Young Financial Services in their offshore corporate department, working on global business companies and trusts. Part of her assignment involved being based in Jersey with Bailhache Labesse, a reputable law firm, (now part of Appleby) for the setup of a trust department in Mauritius.

In 2004, she started the bar vocational course in Mauritius. She was called to the bar in Mauritius in 2007. She has since then been in practice, working for more than 4 years with Banymandhub Boolell Chambers, one of the leading law firms in Mauritius. During that time, she worked mainly on corporate, tax and commercial matters. From 2009 to 2011, she worked in close collaboration with Etude Guy Rivalland, a reputable firm of attorneys in Mauritius, and this gave her the opportunity to work on various civil litigation briefs, including insurance, labour, tort and commercial matters.

She has considerable experience in the corporate industry and can assist with the drafting of commercial contracts, such constitutions, charge deeds, share pledges, share purchase agreements, shareholder agreements, contracts of employment, lease agreements, commercial agreements as well as trust documentation. She provides assistance in all civil matters, including corporate and tax, securitization, labour/industrial, contract, tort, trust, divorce and recovery of debt.

She is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and an Associate of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ACIS). She can provide services as an independent non-executive director and can also provide advice to the Board of directors of any company on all company issues.

She is fluent in English and French.
